2004-2005 Citywide Poets to Perform

Detroit, MI – Citywide Poets (CWP), InsideOut Literary Arts Project’s intensive after-school writing and performance troupe, will perform in the InsideOut/Citywide Poets Detroit Youth Poetry Slam at 1515 Broadway on Saturday, March 5, 2005. Doors open to the public at 6:30, and the slam begins at 7:00pm. The slam will be emceed by Citywide Poet Co-Director and Detroit poet, Matthew Olzmann, and will feature a panel of five judges consisting of writers from the Detroit writing and spoken word community. The slam is a competitive style reading in which the Citywide Poets will be evaluated on several aspects of their reading including content, style, clarity, and volume. Only current Citywide Poet members will compete in this slam. Depending on the number of poets performing, the slam will consist of possibly two elimination rounds, resulting in 4 winning poets. These four highest scoring poets will travel to San Francisco, California April 20-24, 2005, supported by funding from the Skillman Foundation and InsideOut Literary Arts Project, to compete in the National Youth Poetry Slam. Current CWP members represent six area high schools: Cass, Central, Detroit Performing Arts, Mumford, Kettering, and Western International.
There is a $3 door charge for this event; all proceeds will directly support the Citywide Poets program.
1515 Broadway is an owner-operated, independent community performance theater in downtown Detroit that can accommodate up to 115 persons in the flexible, black-box style space. It is located directly across from the Detroit Opera House, and since 1987 has supported and showcased some of Detroit’s best poetry, theatre, music, and film.
