The Skillman Foundation's 16th Annual Float and Balloon Contest
For the past 16 years, The Skillman Foundation has been partnering with The Parade Company and sponsoring its annual float and balloon contest.
In 2007, the contest was open to Detroit students, K-12, in hopes of encouraging school children to participate in a rewards-based competition that is educational, fun and positively promotes Detroit.
Students were invited to submit a drawing with a focus and strong concentration on the Foundation's Good Schools and Good Neighborhoods programs.
The 2007 winners were: Guadalupe Barrera, an 8th grader from Clippert Academy in Detroit, who was awarded for her float, "The Dancing Flower Garden." And Kenyatta Dearing, a 4th grader from Fleming Academy in Detroit, for her winning balloon design, "Sunflower from the Community Garden."
