Raising A Parent Art Contest & Raising A Parent Essay Contest

Calling Young Artists! The Detroit Public Library invites children ages 9 to 13 across Southeastern Michigan to participate in the "Raising A Parent" art contest for children . The contest is to find sketches to appear in Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley's new book: "Raising A Parent: Lessons My Daughter Taught Me While We Grew Up Together."
Rochelle is also seeking parent essays to be featured in the 2011 book: "Raising A Parent: Lessons Our Children Have Taught Us," an opportunity for parents to tell their own stories.
Children should submit black and white sketches in the following categories: Holidays, Nicknames, First Day of School, Teen Clothes, Bad Words, Report Cards, Birthdays, Back to School, Discipline, First Cars, Privacy, Prom, Vacation Car Rides and Grandparents.
Please send all entries -- sketches and 500-700-word parent essays to either Raising A Parent Art Contest or Raising A Parent Essay Contest to:Detroit Public Library, Marketing Department, 5201 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48202; Attention: Tracey Wyatt
The deadline to submit the sketches is Thursday, April 1. Each must be drawn on an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch sheet of white sketch paper that is TURNED SIDEWAYS. Each sketch should have the child's name, school address and school phone number on the back.
The deadline for the parent essay is Sunday, August 1.
Twelve winning young artists will see their ar published in Rochelle's book and will receive one $500 scholarship. Parents will be contacted about their essays.
