The Skillman Foundation Seeks Examples of Detroit Genius to Celebrate its 60th Anniversary

To celebrate 60 years of service, The Skillman Foundation is looking for nominations of Detroit youth for our 60 Examples of Detroit Genius social media campaign. The campaign will showcase the variety of talents possessed by young Detroiters.

“Genius” is open for interpretation. We want to show youth with amazing accomplishments of all kinds including academics, arts, sports, service to the community, and more. Nominees don’t necessarily have to have received recognition for their accomplishments; we want to feature both the sung and unsung genius of Detroit youth.

To qualify, nominees must reside in Detroit and be under 25 years old.

Nominations can be sent to Mark Navarro, communications fellow, at mnavarro@skillman.org. In your email, please include the following:

  • Nominee first and last name(s)
  • Nominee age(s)
  • What genius or talent are you nominating them for?
  • Tell us a little bit about their talent. What drives them? How has it helped them grow? What have they accomplished?
  • A photo, approved to share on social media by the youth(s) (and their parent(s) or guardian(s) if they are under 18 years old)

We will notify you in the coming months if your nominees have been selected to participate in the campaign.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
